The Lagundo wine and fruit have long enjoyed anunrivalled reputation. Thanks to the Alpine-Mediterranean climate which characterises the Merano basin, grapes and fruit in general grow and ripen well in this area. In 1909, the 37 founder members of the Lagundo Cellar Cooperative chose as their headquarters the “Marchettischer Wine Merchant” premises in the centre of Merano, the local town with a well-founded name as a spa centre. Wine has been served, tasted, enjoyed and sold in the original premises for over a century.
The growth and expansion of the Lagundo Wine Cooperative is closely related to the history of the surrounding area. Regarding wine production, considerable changes took place when was is now called South Tyrol was annexed to Italy. The Lagundo Cooperative managed to make a name for itself during the years between the two World Wars and bought two restaurant premises where its own wines were offered. The years after the last were was not an easy period but problems were faced with courage and more modern methods were introduced to improve the quality of our wines.
The Algund/Lagundo Cooperative united with the nearby Marling/Marlengo Cooperative in 1984 to found the Meran Burggrafler Wine Cellar. The distillery in which we still produce “Algunder Treber” is still found in our Meran premises. We changed our name to “Kellerei Algund” (Algund Wine Cellar) in the year 2000. As well as producing top-quality distilled alcohol, we are now also involved in the Algund/Lagundo vineyards and in activities involving the protection of our local culture.
